Manure Testing Program

Managing manure for optimum economic crop production with minimum environmental impact requires a knowledge of the manure's nutrient content. While standardized or "book" values listing average nutrient contents of manures are available, they are of little value because of the large variation that exists among different manure storage and handling systems. Instead, manure analysis is recommended for the accurate determination and optimum management of manure nutrients.

Free sample mailers and submission forms are available from the laboratory   or from county offices of the Penn State Cooperative ExtensionAlternatively, you may submit your manure sample (approximately 2 cups) in your own plastic container and a manure submission form (pdf format).  Please submit payment with sample.

Information on interpreting your manure analysis report and on calculating the appropriate manure application rates for your crops is available in the fact sheet, Using the Penn State Manure Analysis Report (pdf format).

The Standard Manure Test 1 of this program provides the minimum analysis needed to develop a nutrient management plan. Test results in this package include total and ammonium nitrogen, total phosphorus, total potassium and percent solids.

Standard Manure Test 2 contains all of the analytes in package 1 plus total calcium, magnesium, sulfur copper, zinc, manganese, sodium, iron and aluminum. Additional analyses are also available.

In many manure storage systems there is considerable variation in the manure nutrient content even within the storage unit. It is recommended that at least once after a manure storage is constructed a detailed analysis of the manure be performed to determine the amount of this variation. This process involves sampling the manure periodically as the storage is emptied for field application. The samples may be taken after a specific number of loads or whenever a significant change in the manure consistency occurs. To facilitate this sampling, a special kit has been developed that contains sample bottles and information sheets for 5 samples that can be submitted together for this purpose. After the five samples are submitted, a separate summary report detailing the minimum, maximum, average, and variability of the analytes tested in the five samples will be provided in addition to the individual analytical reports for the five samples.  Free sample mailers and submission forms are available from the laboratory or from county offices of the Penn State Cooperative Extension.  Please submit payment with sample.
